It’s been a while since we posted on the blog but that’s because we’re trying hard to build on our soft launch and add loads more features, teachers and close some potential partnerships but last week we got some great news. We’ve been nominated for a prestigious Golden Spider Award in the category of ‘Best e-business Website’.

The Golden Spiders are the equivalent of the Oscars for the Irish Website Industry and so to be nominated and shortlisted alone is incredible but we’re still holding out a little hope of a win on the big night. We’re up against some pretty stiff competition so we’re controlling our expectations somewhat.

We’re still trying hard to sign up more and more teachers and will be trying to promote the website heavily to users once we have a decent level of classes on the site, so if you’re a teacher already on the site we appreciate your patience as our traffic slowly grows and if you’re a teacher considering using the service, give it a shot…there’s nothing to lose.

And wish us luck on November 19th!

We’ve been back in Dublin a week and it’s given us the opportunity to re-group, look at everything that happened during our time in San Francisco and move forward to continue the development of VidSchool both technically and in terms of growth.

Since we launched at Techcrunch50, we’ve managed to get a few pieces of coverage here and there including a video interview on Techcrunch UK, a nice analysis of the website by Kirsten Winkler on her blog and we’ve also managed to get reviewed and voted for by a few people on KillerStartups (hint: We’d really appreciate any votes we could get here! ).

All in all we had a great great week in San Francisco on many fronts and we’re looking forward to getting back over there as soon as possible. As for the next few months with VidSchool, we’ve got a big partnership which we can hopefully announce in the next month, we’re actively raising capital to develop additional features that will improve the overall service to both student and teacher and we’re looking to sign up a whole load more teachers to develop what we hope will become the ultimate online learning platform.

We’re delighted to announce that VidSchool.com has been offered a demopit spot at the annual Techcrunch50 event being held in San Francisco on the 14th and 15th of September 2009. Techcrunch50 is a great event which showcases, what the organisers consider to be, the top 50 startups in the world. The startups need to launch to the public for the first time ever on the date of their presentation at the event. Whilst we were disappointed to not be included in the top 49 spots, there is still the opportunity for us to get up on stage and present VidSchool.com if we’re selected as the crowds favourite demopit company, so we have our fingers crossed for that.

Either way, we’re delighted to have been invited as one of the most exciting startups the judges saw amongst thousands of applications and we’ll go there and show off VidSchool and hopefully set up some useful meetings and create some awareness.

We hope to develop one of the most popular and useful learning tools online which empowers both students and teachers to embrace new ways of both teaching and learning online. Research is starting to suggest that online learning is becoming more and more effective as time goes on due to the fact that students can manage and control their own learning timetable and can often re-visit items they may be struggling with. We feel it’s time that any teacher in the world is given the tools which will allow them to teach their current students but also attract new students from around the world.
